In the past three labour candidates won seats in
the House of Commons. They were Arthur Butee from Winnipeg, Ralph Smith from
Vancouver and Alphonse Verville from Montreal.
Workers’ Worries:
One of the problems for workers was that they
were not assured safety at work. Wherever they worked they had many accidents.
Workers in forestry industries were in a lot of danger and had regular
accidents. In B.C a machine that was used to remove trees of hill slopes was
called “Widow Maker”. The workers in Ottawa valley and the Maritimes had to
break up log jams which were very dangerous.
